About

Thomas’ story is an inspiring tale of courage, rediscovery, and the power of finding new meaning in life after a major tragedy. Rising after an accident that caused severe brain damage, two brain fractures, and seven facial fractures, fighting through depression, and finding a unique path back to life through a passion for vintage cars and travel, testify to incredible personal strength and will. The Vintage Holiday project, which started with a 1963 VW Beetle and a 1966 caravan, became not just a path to personal healing for Thomas but also a source of joy and inspiration for others.

Vintage Holiday: An Adventure Begins

Thomas’ journey began alone, on the open roads, surrounded by the whisper of history and the therapeutic effect of driving. The severe brain injury had demanded a lot from him, but on the road, he found a sanctuary where he could feel alive again. Encounters with people along the way, attracted by the charming convoy of vintage vehicles, helped to revive Thomas’ faith in life and humanity.

VintageFerie - Where Timeless Elegance Meets Adventure

The background for the whole idea of Vintageferie came after a year of fighting back to life again following a serious accident that could have ended with “the end.”

After working my way back to functioning as a human again, after two skull fractures and seven facial fractures resulting in a serious brain injury, in addition to everything a traumatic injury does to a person’s ability to function again, the entire idea of Vintageferie was set in motion when I finally got permission to drive again.

Throughout the rehabilitation period, there was one thing occupying my mind, and that was that when I eventually convinced the authorities that I was more than capable of driving again, and the license was reinstated, I would immediately jump into the 1963 Beetle, hook up the caravan, and just hit the road. Without a plan for anything, not where, when, or for what. It was all about one thing, and that was to LIVE.

Joy in Sharing

What started as a personal journey quickly evolved into a shared experience as Thomas discovered the joy of sharing his passion with others. The idea of creating a vintage holiday destination near the Atlantic Road, a place known for its natural beauty and attraction for tourists, was both innovative and timely. It was a place where history, adventure, and unity could be intertwined, and where visitors could experience a taste of the less traveled road.

The Realization of a Dream

With a big yes from the landowner, Thomas took the first steps to realize his vision. The land he was lent was perfectly situated to attract the attention of many passing by on their way to or from the Atlantic Road. This was not only a victory for Thomas personally but also for the community of vintage enthusiasts and the many who would find joy in this unique form of vacation. If you did not know Thomas before the accident, you would most likely never believe that just a few years ago, he was so severely injured that the future most likely would end in a wheelchair in front of a TV, and not as the man you meet along the road with free coffee, always smiling in front of the fire. Here, everyone is welcome whether it’s just to have a chat, get a coffee, or spend the night on the land. Or if you want to rent a car to experience the roads and nature of the west country in a classic car or if you are several who want a 1-week trip with a local guide.

An Inspiring Journey

Thomas’ story is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest times, hope and new beginnings can be found in the most unexpected places. His ability to embrace life again, to create something that heals himself and enriches the lives of others, is a deeply moving tale of human endurance and creativity. Vintage Holiday became more than just a holiday destination; it became a symbol of rediscovery, community, and the eternal quest for meaning and joy in life.

Overlanding

In October 2021, the license was reinstated. I set off in the Beetle and the caravan, both from the 60s, and drove 35,000 km from October to March that winter. I followed the weather, the snow, the mountains, just to push every boarder possible, just to feel I was alive. Long story short, through this journey, my thoughts became increasingly convinced that if this gave me so much happiness, maybe it could be a good idea to offer a similar experience to others, without them necessarily having to get a brain injury or buy both a car and a caravan just to experience this, whether it was just for a long weekend, weeks, or longer vacations.

There came more cars and more caravans. It was necessary to find a place where both the landowner and the location were right in terms of placement and expenses. Today, the selection is increasing step by step. The location is perfect in terms of both placement and, not least, a fantastic landowner who allows me to do what I do from June 1st to October 1st each year.

All of this has developed into a love for a lifestyle, vintage cars, camping life, and most importantly, people. Because people surprise and impress me every single day. When you’re also inspired by Norway’s varied landscapes and rich cultural heritage, there’s nothing finer than evenings with new tourists and new stories stopping by during the summer.

I warmly welcome you to Vintageferie!
